Large Crowds, Gov. Murphy Mourn Death Of Esteemed Lakewood Rabbi

Throngs of people were expected at a funeral service for an esteemed rabbi in Lakewood Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Grand Rabbi Rav Matisyahu Chaim Salomon, a longtime leader of Beth Medrash Govoha Yeshiva, a Haredi Jewish learning institution, died on Tuesday, Jan. 2. He was 86 years old.

Gov. Phil Murphy was among those who offered his condolences after Rabbi Salomon's death.

"I share in the pain over the loss of Rabbi Matisyahu Salomon and send condolences to the BMG Yeshiva community and so many who followed his teachings," Gov. Murphy posted on Twitter. "May his memory be a blessing."

Forest Avenue between Fourth and 14th streets will be closed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Rabbi Salomon's funeral. Parking will be difficult, so anyone attending should be prepared to walk and some shuttles will be available.

Those using NJ Transit should walk west from First Street and cross Madison Avenue at intersections with traffic signals located at Second, Fourth, and Sixth streets. 

Any buses can park at the Lakewood Blue Claws lot located at 2 Stadium Way while waiting to pick up anyone attending the funeral.

Rabbi Salomon was born on November 28, 1937, in Gateshead, England and was widely known as a leading lecturer in Orthodox Judaism.

VIN News called the rabbi a "master of Torah and Mussar, who impacted tens of thousands and whose presence and inspiration made an immeasurable imprint on the Lakewood community."
